Controlled burn causing cloud of smoke in Monroe County

NEWPORT, MI (Toledo News Now) – A controlled burn is causing a large plume of black smoke in Monroe County.

According to Monroe County Central Dispatch, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is conducting a controlled burn at the Pointe Mouille State Game Area just north of Newport.

Area residents should not be alarmed as the fire is under control.

Bedford Twp. passes non-homestead tax renewal levy

BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, MI (Toledo News Now) - On Tuesday night, Bedford School leaders closely watched election returns as more than $3 million was on the line.

One issue on the ballot in Bedford Township was the non-homestead tax, which is an $18 million levy that businesses, anyone with rental property and anyone who has a vacation home has to pay. It definitely brought people to the polls. All voters helped decide the issue, but the tax is only paid by those specific property owners.

Bedford school board authorizes layoffs

TEMPERANCE, MI (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) - The Bedford Board of Education held a special meeting Tuesday evening  to authorize layoffs as part of a cost-cutting campaign to balance its budget.

The school board is still waiting for a big decision from the state, but couldn't wait any longer to put teachers on alert. They voted unanimously to authorize the administration to send out layoff notices to up to 45 teachers this week based on seniority.

Construction causing delays in southern Monroe County

MONROE COUNTY, MI - Construction in Monroe County is causing
delays for drivers.

Two of three lanes on I-75 between the Ohio/Michigan line
and the Laplaisance Rd. Exit are closed.  That's about 12 miles.

Drivers have been frustrated.  "It's a little
challenging. We saw some cars going off the ramp the opposite direction. Almost
got into an accident," said one driver.

The barrels are expected to be removed by Sunday at 6:00pm.

Monroe County Sheriff to retire after 16 years

MONROE, MI (Toledo News Now) – Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield announced he will not seek a fifth term as sheriff Friday.

In a statement Crutchfield said the decision to retire was a difficult one.  Crutchfield says he made the decision now in order to give plenty of time for other candidates to make the decision to run. 

"I wish all of the candidates the very best and pray the voters will make their selection carefully," Crutchfield said in a statement.
